Spitfire 1947

A clipped wing Spitfire Mk 9 sits in it's hangar after delivery. Shortly after the end of World War II, South Africa's two forefront fighter squadrons numbers 1 and 2 reformed and were equipped with ex-RAF Spitfires. By 1947 Waterkloof had had become the principal fighter base of the SAAF. The aircraft depicted in the painting was issued to No. 1 Squadron and was coded AX/K. Other units also received Spitfires after the war with the type was used for photo reconnaissance and fighter trainer.
