Final Analysis

by Jim Deitz
The glamour and flamboyance of the fighter pilot is overshadowed by the grim reality of war. Time and again man and machine are pitted against an equally determined opponent. The odds of survival are closely linked to a pilots airmanship, capabilities of his aircraft and the uncontrollable element of luck.

As the day ends Royal Flying Corps pilots reflect over the days events, exchanging lessons learned with fellow squadron members with the omnipresent hand gestures, a trait linking all combat pilots regardless of nationality or era. Describing every detail of an encounter or a sudden brush with death may provide others with the knowledge to survive tomorrow's mission against an unrelenting enemy.
