This Globemaster III, “Reach 291” A/C # 92-3291, makes history with the first operational C-17 assault landing with a delivery of cargo to the then closed by construction runway of Howard AFB, Panama. The C-17 will carry many times the cargo weight of the C-130, and outsized cargo previously requiring use of the C-5 and large airports, direct to forward areas and use less than 3000 feet of runway. It is powered by P&W F117-PW-100 high bypass-ratio turbofan engines exhausting directly onto large flaps extended into the exhaust stream allowing steep and relatively slow approaches and landing speeds to unimproved airstrips.
