Angels 20

by Tiro Vorster
A pair of No. I Squadron Spitfire (X's on patrol) 20,000 feet over Italy, 1944. The South African Air Force was heavily involved in the Mediterranean Theater of operations from the first days of the Western Desert campaign in 1941 to the final surrender in 1945.

The SAAF flew Spitfires well after World War II into the 1950's. The type had been considered for service in Korea but it was dropped in favor of the Mustang. This print has been signed by former Spitfire pilots and the artist.
